History of boxers
The first types of underwear were nothing more than a leather loincloth around men's waist. It looked like a diaper. The ancient Egyptians and Aztecs also wore these loincloths. The ancient Romans had a different choice in underwear; you could choose a wrapped loincloth or shorts. Around the 13th century, there was a new type of underwear; they made loose-fitting pull-on underwear, also known as 'braies.' The braies were made of linen, calf-length drawers, especially knights and kings wore these. After some time, the braies evolved. They became a bit shorter, and they made a flap in the crotch area to urinate through. They were also made in different fabrics like cotton, silk, or linen. After many years, when the bicycle was introduced, the braies developed further into a jockstrap. This undergarment was to protect cycle jockeys. It wasn't until 1920 that Jacob Colomb, who founded the brand Everlast, created a lighter version of what we call boxing shorts. There was, and sometimes still it a battle between boxers and briefs. Men who preferred boxers say it is better for your health to wear looser-fitting underwear. It allows air to circulate. Around the mid 20th century, the 'thighty-whities' were popular. And around the '70s, tight jeans became fashionable for men, which made briefs the underwear men would prefer and choose.
Differences of underwear
- Briefs is a short, slim-fitting type of underwear and swimwear. Usually, they have a waistband attached to the fabric from the pelvis to the crotch and buttocks. Men and women wear this type of underwear.
- Trunks is a style that is between a boxer and a brief. It is slim-fitted, and looks stylish, and is perfect for exercise. Everything stays firm and in its place.
- The jockstrap is underwear that protects your crotch during contact sports. It has a firm waistband and fabric that covers the front part. On the backside, it has two elastic straps that ensure the material stays in its place.
- Boxers are underwear that looks a lot like regular shorts. The classic model is made of cotton with longer trouser legs; they have a loose fit with a flexible waistband. The fabric will hang loose on your waist. Nowadays, we see more brands making slim-fitted boxers. These models will end just under your butt.
- Midway briefs are underwear like a boxer, but these are longer than standard boxers, it ends midway on your upper leg.
